President’s Message

To the Winfield Curling Club Membership
Well here we are at the end of the 2021 – 2022 season. I want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for your support and generosity throughout the season. The membership this year was approximately 200 plus. This is up from the past 2 years and hopefully we can keep it growing. As some past members held back from curling due to COVID, I am hearing rumblings that they are ready to return! Lets keep positive and hope that COVID is not going to interfere in our next season.
We were able to successfully host the Mixed bonspiel in November and the Men’s bonspiel in March. Both of these were a huge success. Unfortunately the ladies lost out having theirs as the COVID restrictions were lifted too late. Oh well, next year!
As everyone is aware we did go ahead with the ice camera/tv project. We want to thank the Rotary Club for their donation of $2500 and the Sunday Army and Navy group for their donation of $500. The 50/50 money raised was tagged to all go to the project and that was approximately $1300. Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all who participated. We are currently waiting to hear back from the Rotary Club in regards to possibly another grant of $2500.
A capital expense this year was a new glass washer for the bar which was a substantial purchase, but a necessary one.
All in all we did fairly well financially and the good news is we will open again in the fall of 2022!
Our leagues changed a bit this season with Monday men’s amalgamating with Thursday, and a new league on Wednesday with 2 person curling. The interest in this league grew as the season went on and hopefully in the fall we will get enough people to run 2 draws on that night. Monday and Tuesday ladies remained about the same. Friday night mixed was a huge success. The bar did well on that night! Then seniors continued to keep busy Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Our junior program moved to Monday afternoon and was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Ali and Ella for their time and expertise to the junior program.
If we avoid COVID restrictions next year hopefully our rentals will increase on the weekends. As a reminder: the club is open to rentals for Christmas parties, personal occasions and organization rentals.
The sponsorship from our community has bee great. Please refer to the sponsorship list and thank them as you enter their business. If anyone is interested in becoming a sponsor please contact Wolf at the club and he can assist you with prices.
Thank you to Wolf and Darren for their continued contribution to the Winfield Curling Club. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated.
Again, a huge thank you to the Board of Directors. Your time and effort shows in the success of the Curling Club. These people are a great asset to the club as without them the necessary decisions and discussions would not be held and the doors basically would not open. On that note, I once again am asking for volunteers to sit on the board. I am leaving my position of president after 6 years and a board member for approximately 10 years prior to that. It has been a rewarding and great learning experience but is time for me to move on and invite new people with fresh ideas to the broad. Please give this some consideration and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
In closing, once again I want to say thank you to all the members of the curling club for making this a successful season. Enjoy your spring and summer and we will look forward to seeing everyone back in the fall of 2022.

Fern Conelley,
President of the Winfield Curling Club
